Description
The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), is seeking qualified candidates for one tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Full Professor.
Manufacturing is expected to become the single largest funding area at multiple federal agencies due to existing and future supply chain issues that pervade all aspects of our society, economy, and national defense. Additionally, the global climate/energy challenge requires greater emphasis on sustainability in all manufacturing processes. More sustainable manufacturing may be achieved not only through advancements in renewable energy, sustainable materials, and recycling, but also by making manufacturing processes smarter and more efficient through incorporation of emerging artificial intelligence (AI) tools, closed-loop sensing, and physics-informed machine learning algorithms applied to traditional and advanced manufacturing processes.
The MABE department is seeking candidates at the Full Professor level that will develop and lead a vibrant research program focused on advanced manufacturing that emphasizes sustainability and/or smart process design & control approaches. For example, machine learning-enabled process control for advanced manufacturing of metal, polymer, and composite structural materials could help usher in a new generation of sustainable, high-performance hierarchical materials. The successful candidate would be expected to pursue and leverage opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration and funding across the college, the university, and with Oak Ridge National Laboratory through the Manufacturing Demosntration Facility (MDF), the Institute for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (IAMM), the University of Tennessee - Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UT-ORII), the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education (Bredesen Center), and the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI), among others.
The Tickle College of Engineering (TCE) is undergoing an unprecedented period of growth and success and anticipates adding 30 or more new faculty over the next three years as part of ambitious cluster hiring campaigns led by Chancellor Donde Plowman and Dean Matthew Mench. The college has set records in research expenditures, enrollment, incoming student GPA, diversity, and intellectual property development over the past two years. New facilities include the state-of-the-art Zeanah Engineering Complex, the University of Tennessee Manufacturing and Design Enterprise (TN MADE) facility, and the Innovation South building now under construction that will house UT's Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility (FCMF). TCE currently has 185 tenured/tenure-track and 67 non-tenure track faculty in its seven academic departments and offers 12 undergraduate, 16 MS, and 15 PhD degree programs. Affiliated with TCE and located in Tullahoma, Tennessee, the UT Space Institute (UTSI) is a hub of aerospace and defense research. The college is also home to eight research centers and three interdisciplinary institutes. With approximately 3,800 undergraduate and 1,150 graduate students, the college is 31st among public universities in the most recent U.S. News and World Report graduate rankings. Faculty in the college have won 21 early career awards (NSF, DoE, DARPA, AFOSR, and ARO) since 2016. Furthremore, UT is leading and part of the new NSF's Regional Innovation Engine awards (RIEs). In FY22, the college had NSF Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) research expenditures of $109 million.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
All applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent) in a science or engineering field at the time of application and eligible for appointment at the rank of Full Professor at the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Primary consideration will be given to those applicants that have established a successful research program with international stature, a successful record of teaching, and a compelling vision for future research at UTK. Demonstrated potential for leadership in large university research initiatives is also highly desired. Applicants with a research emphasis on process design & control for sustainable advanced manufacturing are strongly encouraged.
